Information on the 2021 application coming soon

Sam J. Hord Memorial Scholarship
Any student who is a member of South Kentucky Rural Electric Cooperative, or whose parents are members, or a dependent student whose parents are members, is eligible for the scholarship of tuition fees at Somerset Community College.

Deadline for the fall semester is generally around March 1. Call Somerset Community College for more information.

W.I.R.E. Scholarships
The Women In Rural Electrification (Kentucky W.I.R.E.) will be awarding three $1,000 scholarships this year to eligible Kentucky college students.

The Kentucky W.I.R.E. is an organization of wives of rural electric cooperative directors, managers, and other key employees. Its goal is to further the publics’ understanding an appreciation of the rural electric program.

The award is open to any eligible student whose immediate family is served by a Kentucky rural electric cooperative, such as South Kentucky RECC. To qualify, applicants for the scholarship must be a full junior or senior with at least 60 hours of credits at a Kentucky college or university by the start of the fall term. (Electric cooperative employees, directors, managers, and their relatives are not eligible.)

To apply, prospective junior and senior college students should contact their local South Kentucky RECC office or call the toll-free number, 800-264-5112, for an application form and return it to: Cathy Kessler, Kentucky Association of Electric Cooperatives, P. O. Box 32170, Louisville, Kentucky 40232.

Applications will be reviewed by a committee of the Kentucky W.I.R.E. and the chosen applicants will be notified.

Kentucky/Washington Rural Electric Youth Tour
Applications for the Rural Electric Youth Tour in Washington, D. C., are accepted by South Kentucky RECC usually around the first of March. Competition for the all-expense-paid trip is open to high school juniors, between the ages of 16 and 18, whose parent(s) or guardian(s) receive electric service at their primary residence from South Kentucky RECC. Children or grandchildren of South Kentucky RECC employees, directors, and attorneys are not eligible.

Students must complete a typed essay of 500 words on the subject “Why I want to represent South Kentucky RECC in Washington, D. C.” All essays and a completed application form must be returned to the guidance counselor of each school. See your guidance counselor for an application.

Twenty-four semifinalists from Adair County High School, Casey County High School, Clinton County High School, Lincoln County High School, McCreary Central High School, Pulaski County High School, Somerset High School, Southwestern High School, Russell County High School, and Wayne County High School, and representatives from private schools and the home school program will be selected for a one-day trip to Frankfort, Kentucky, for the Frankfort Rural Electric Youth Tour. From that group, up to 12 will be chosen to go to Washington, D. C. for the Rural Electric Youth Tour.

Winners will be taken to Washington, D. C. in June where they will tour national landmarks and learn more about how the United States government works.

For more information, contact Alan Coffey at (606) 678-4121 or 1-800-264-5112 or go online http://youthtour.kaec.org.
