South Kentucky RECC Students Participate in 2026 Washington Youth Tour
Six local high school students recently represented South Kentucky RECC during the 2026 Washington Youth Tour, a weeklong leadership experience that gives students the opportunity to explore American history, government and the cooperative commitment to community.
This year's South Kentucky RECC delegates were:
- Jonah Collins – Pulaski County High School
- Callie Davis – Somerset Christian School
- Kendyl Dunagan – Somerset Christian School
- Catherine Hardy – Somerset Christian School
- Gabrielle McGinnis – Wayne County High School
- Micah Pryor – Wayne County High School
Coordinated by Kentucky Electric Cooperatives and the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA), the Washington Youth Tour brings together students from across the state and nation for an immersive educational experience in Washington, D.C.
Throughout the week, delegates visited historic landmarks, museums, memorials and the U.S. Capitol. They also met with congressional staff members and U.S. Senator Rand Paul to discuss issues affecting electric cooperatives, including FEMA reform and the future of artificial intelligence.
In addition to learning about the nation's history and government, students reflected on the sacrifices of America's veterans, developed leadership skills and built lasting friendships with fellow delegates from across Kentucky.
"The Washington Youth Tour gives students an opportunity to experience our nation's history and government firsthand while developing leadership skills that will serve them well in the future," said Kevin Newton, President & CEO of South Kentucky RECC. "We're proud to invest in these outstanding young people and look forward to seeing the positive impact they'll make in their schools, communities and beyond."
South Kentucky RECC also recognizes Communications Generalist Justin Mayfield, who served as one of the statewide chaperones, helping guide and support students throughout the trip.
Each year, South Kentucky RECC sponsors local high school students to participate in the Washington Youth Tour as part of its ongoing commitment to developing future leaders and strengthening the communities it serves.
