A NOTICE TO OUR MEMBERS
Some prepaid members may have noticed unexpected changes in their account balance, and we want to explain what happened.
The Fuel Adjustment Charge (FAC) reflects changes in the cost of fuel used to generate electricity. These costs are set by our wholesale power provider, East Kentucky Power Cooperative, and are passed directly through to members. South Kentucky RECC does not collect or profit from the FAC; it simply recovers the actual cost of fuel supply.
During the month of January, a processing issue caused the FAC to be deducted daily at an incorrect amount on prepaid accounts. When the issue was identified, the correct FAC amount was applied when accounts were reconciled at the end of the month. As a result, the adjustment appeared all at once, which may have caused prepaid balances to decrease more quickly than expected.
This adjustment did not reflect additional electricity usage or new charges. It represents the correction of fuel costs that had already occurred over time and should have been reflected gradually throughout the month.
We know the recent outages caused by Winter Storm Fern were extremely difficult, and many members are still recovering from the disruption it created. During a time when energy use was already higher, and some members were without power for several days, we understand how concerning it was to see something on your account that didn’t look right.
Because this was a processing issue, South Kentucky RECC is allowed to spread out the corrected FAC deduction over time. If this option would be helpful to you, please contact our office so we can make arrangements for your account.
